Charize Hortmann is a paralegal who joined Ford O’Brien Landy LLP in 2024, she is also an attorney from Brazil with a solid academic and professional background.

Charize started her practice as a public defender in criminal cases and later specialized in complex civil liability. She earned her Juris Doctor (JD) in 2011 and pursued a specialization in Philosophy in 2017. Charize’s passion has always been to study civil and social rights, and that’s why she graduated with a master’s degree in human rights from the University of Minho in Portugal in 2017. Aiming to improve her knowledge about international legal issues and learn more about American law, she furthered her legal expertise with an LLM in US Law from the University of Florida in 2022.

In addition to her litigation practice, Charize is also involved in voluntary work at the environmental NGO Canteiros Coletivos, implementing agroforestry gardens in needy communities in Salvador-BA, where she contributes her legal expertise to support environmental initiatives.

Charize is also an author. Her book Artificial Intelligence in the Labor Market examines the impact of emerging technologies on the job market and labor relationships. She has written several book chapters and academic papers, including her contribution to Concepts and Dialogues across Shifting Spaces in Intercultural Business, published by Cambridge, which has received multiple book prizes at European book fairs. She has also been a member, since 2020 of the research group at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), collaborating on international reports on issues regarding environmental compliance.

Her diverse educational background, extensive international experience, and commitment to legal and environmental causes enrich her practice, offering a multifaceted perspective on complex legal issues.

In her spare time, Charize likes to read books, spend time with her dog, Zito, hiking in the nature and do Yoga.
